Disstress or Distress ?

Exemple : ‘’The dog looks like it is in distress due to the heat!’’

The word "distress" is often misspelt as it is comprised of the word "stress" and the prefix "dis." However the "s" from the beginning of "stress" and the one from the end of "dis" are not both preserved and only one "s" is needed.
